Burning in Your Heart

It is one of the most uncomfortable feelings in the world. There are few who are immune to it. It’s that burning sensation you feel after improperly combining your food or because of a decrease in stomach acid that happens to some as they age.

HCL

A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to be on a training call with Suzanne Somers. Ever since she was diagnosed with breast cancer and chose natural means to heal her body, I have been intrigued with her take on health and wellness.

She mentioned that during her shows she can always tell the age of her audience by the number of times they clear their throats. She went on to explain how the decrease in Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) in the stomach is the culprit.

Internal Mechanism

When your stomach does not produce enough acid to break down your meal, it utilizes its early warning system — called heartburn — to alert you of the problem. It is usually at this point when most people reach for an antacid of some sort, which works in an interesting way.

Your stomach is already low on acid, which is why you are suffering from heartburn. The antacid further reduces the amount of stomach acid to a critically low level. This in turn causes your brain to trigger your stomach to produce more acid.

Natural Remedy

The home remedy for heartburn is pure, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with the mother). I like the Bragg’s brand. It is available at most health food stores and you can even order it online.

There are instructions on how to take it on the side of the bottle.

The easiest way is to mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey into 8 ounces of water. You could do this in hot water (as a tea) or in room temperature water.

If you are brave enough, you could also just swallow a tablespoon of vinegar. Obviously, it is not as strong as HCL, but it typically brings relief pretty quickly.

Food Combinations

If you’re interested in prevention, simply combine your food in a different way. If you are eating meat, combine it with fruit to help your stomach digest the meat more easily. Common examples include pork chops and applesauce (are we all hearing Peter Brady right now?) and turkey and cranberries.

Also, fruit that digests quickly, such as melon, should be eaten separately from other food. Give it about 30 minutes to digest.
